June Blog

Hi everybody,
We have been meaning to start a blog for a while and after a couple months of writers block we have finally got something down on paper. I thought that a good topic to start our blog on would be the farming side of things.

The weather we have had this spring has lead to a bumper crop of grass which means that our feed stores for this winter are looking very healthy indeed. We have just finished our silaging and because the weather has been so good we have made a few fields of hay. We are very cautious with hay as a few years ago we had a stack of hay spontaneously combust because it was slightlydamp, so we now make sure that the grass is very dry before we bale it up.

As well as being busy with grass keeping we have just started lambing Devon and Cornwall long wools. As well as producing a lean flavoursome meat, the Devon & Cornwall Longwools also produce more wool per sheep than any other British Breed. They are also a rare breed and are registered with the Rare Breeds Survival Trust, they are currently on their Watchlist as vulnerable. We hope to keep the breed alive by promoting the perks of the breed. We were planning to lamb in January but our ram called Billy wasn't "up" to the job so we had to find a replacement, called Phillip.
